Life is all about balance. IF you are looking for some additional things to do with your child at home, here are some ideas. I will update periodically.
Reading Success!
1. Read to your child! Picture books are a great start, then move on to reading them good-fit chapter books aloud.
2. Have your child read a "good fit book" aloud to you. See the "Five Finger Rule." They must be able to read it fluently (their reading sounds natural without too many pauses or errors). Practicing with books that are too hard or too easy will not improve their reading! Before reading aloud, give your child a chance to read the book (or section of the book they're going to read) in their head first, then read it aloud to you.
Reading Strategies Chart!
Here's a great chart to help coach your child when they are reading!
3. Practice sight words. Sight words are words students should eventually be able to read without sounding out, i.e. they know them by sight! Please don't worry if your child doesn't know some of the words; they aren't supposed to yet! As they practice reading and practice sight words, they will quickly begin to build their vocabulary! Start with List 1 and write each word on a recipe card, or small piece of paper. Practice flashcard style, but break it up into manageable chunks if needed(e.g. practice 10 words per day, or at a time). Put the words they do not know into a pile: these will be their "challenge" words (if they can't tell you what the word is after 2-3 seconds, it's a challenge word). Practice challenge words about once per week. Then, once they've mastered List 1, move on to List 2!
Math. There are countless math games, math game ideas (with cards, dice, etc.) and apps available online. Search "grade 2 math games." Click below for a great link (also has word, strategy and other fun games).
